Following the major water outage affecting over 40,000 homes across Rotherham and Sheffield, Alexander Stafford on behalf of Local Conservatives, has written to Yorkshire Water’s Chief Executive demanding a full explanation.
Alexander said: “I am horrified to be reading and speaking with residents right across Rother Valley who STILL do not have clear, reliable running water at their taps, more than 24 hours after this incident began.
‘It is especially awful to hear from those on Yorkshire Water’s own vulnerable/priority register who tell me they have still not been contacted directly by the company, despite this disruption now dragging on for over a day.”
In Alexander’s letter he has asked why resilience measures failed, why no effective back‑up arrangements were in place, how vulnerable customers will be proactively supported going forward, and what automatic compensation will be provided for loss of supply and degraded water quality.
Alexander has also written to Northern Powergrid’s CEO, asking why the backup generators failed to keep the water facility up and running during an outage. Critical infrastructure must be properly resilient and it is unacceptable if contingency arrangements were not strong enough.
